Where can I get free moving boxes?

U-Haul runs a free "Take-A-Box, Leave-A-Box" exchange at all its company stores and many of its dealers: take boxes other people have left, and leave yours when you're done. It also has an online Box Exchange for trading or buying used boxes.

Liquor and wine stores (strong, small, with dividers for glasses), Buy Nothing groups, Facebook Marketplace and Nextdoor, office recycling, and friends who've just moved.

Check each box is dry, clean and firm before you trust it with anything heavy, and put heavy things in small boxes.
